New piste at Maldon
David Arnold is a member of Maldon U3A, which is an organisation for
'those no longer in full time employment' i.e. retired.
For about 5 years around 20 of them had been playing Petanque in a variety of places, car parks, peopleís gardens, etc.
They decided to approach Maldon District Council for a Petanque pitch and they allocated a super site for a new terrain in the Promenade Park.
The stones on the underneath layer, are about 75mm thick, then on top of that will be 25mm + of 6mm to nothing crushed stone.
It will then be whacked flat.
Maldon U3A is doing all the work and the council supply the materials, so it is pretty slow going.
(Any volunteers would be made welcome!)
There will not be Ďa club' but Maldon U3A will meet to have a game probably three times a week.
It will be a free public facility and anyone can play.
Clubs could meet & use the facilities too but U3A will not be organising any competitions or anything like that.
It is hoped to start, with half the terrain finished, in a couple of weeks.
It will be one of the most attractive terrains in the country.
