About Us

On 9th January 1989 petanque enthusiasts drawn from local foreign language classes met at the Epping Sports Centre in Hemnall Street.
Later a club was formed under the auspices of Epping Horizons 50 plus, a group set up by Epping Forest District Council (EFDC). Help and tuition was provided by members of the Eastern Region of the British Petanque Association (BPA).

Originally the club met at the Sports Centre, playing in the rifle range and on the back car park, but in April 1989, the club moved to the disused cycle track on Stonards Hill Recreation Ground. The cycle track was improved by adding 5 tons and then a further 7 tons of gravel and levelling the surface.
The terrain was and still is used by the club under contract with Epping Town Council (ETC) for exclusive use at specified times during the week.
Since then we have built a piste of approximately 15 by 14.5 metres allowing 6 games to be played in the centre with an overflow onto the original outer circle. The work on the central area was carried out by members in 1996 and 1997 with the help of a grant from the ETC for the purchase of materials.

Today, Epping Horizons Petanque Club is a thriving club not just for the over fifties, as the name may suggest, but for all ages and abilities.

You will find us on our terrain at Stonards Hill Recreation Ground, Epping on Monday and Saturday afternoons all year round.

Most of these playing sessions are informal, but there are five club competitions each year, three played on Saturdays and two on Mondays for which prizes are awarded and members are able to take part in open competitions throughout the Region.

If you are interested, want to learn how to play, already a proficient player, or if you fancy giving the game a try come along and have a go, see if it's for you before you decide to join us. The first visit with tuition from our coach is free, after which we hope that you enjoy the game so much that you wish to become a member.
